Air New Zealand is asking to weigh passengers for the purpose of a survey measuring the average weight of passengers.
"For safety reasons, we need to know the weight of all items onboard the aircraft. For passengers, crew and carry on bags, we use average weights that we get every five years through this survey," the airline said on its website.
The weigh-in takes place before passengers reach the boarding gate. Air New Zealand said scales do not display the weight. The data is "fed directly into a computer and recorded anonymously along with thousands of other passengers," the airline said.
Participation is voluntary, and the airline said weigh-ins will not delay flights.
